What we collect
We do not ask you to register, and we do not operate contact forms, comments or newsletters. We do not sell personal data. The processing described below is limited to what is needed to serve the site and to understand, in aggregate, how it is used.
Server log files
Our hosting provider automatically records standard access data that your browser transmits: the page requested, the date and time of the request, the amount of data transferred, the referring page, your browser type and version, your operating system, and your IP address. This data is required to deliver the site and to ensure its stability and security. The legal basis is Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR (legitimate interest in the secure, reliable operation of the website).
Analytics — Matomo (self-hosted)
We use Matomo, an open-source analytics tool, hosted on our own infrastructure at analytics.wissensdemokratie.de. Matomo does not transmit your data to third-party advertising networks, and no data leaves our own servers.
Matomo records the pages you visit, the referring page, your approximate region, your browser and device type, and clicks on outbound and affiliate links. IP addresses are anonymised before storage. Matomo runs in cookieless mode: it sets no cookies and stores nothing on your device. The legal basis is Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR (legitimate interest in understanding and improving how the site is used).
You can object to analytics at any time with the checkbox under Cookie settings below; this stores an opt-out flag in your browser’s local storage, and Matomo is then no longer loaded. Matomo also respects the Do Not Track setting of your browser.
Map tiles and location data
Interactive maps on this site are rendered with Leaflet using the standard map tiles of the OpenStreetMap Foundation. When a map loads, your IP address is transmitted to the OpenStreetMap tile servers in order to deliver the tile images; their handling of that data is described in the OSMF privacy policy. We never request, collect or store your own device location — the maps show fixed points in Rome and do not use your browser’s geolocation API.
Weather widget
The current-weather display queries the Open-Meteo API for fixed coordinates in Rome. Your IP address is transmitted to Open-Meteo to serve the response. The result is cached in your browser’s local storage for 30 minutes to reduce the number of requests; this cache contains only the temperature and weather conditions in Rome and can be cleared at any time through your browser settings.
Fonts and libraries
The Leaflet mapping library, stylesheets and scripts are served from our own server. No content delivery networks or external font services are used.
Affiliate links and booking widgets
This site earns revenue through affiliate partnerships. Pages contain links and embedded booking widgets from GetYourGuide and Travelpayouts (including its partner programmes), and hotel links from Stay22. When a widget or partner script loads, or when you follow an affiliate link, the partner receives your IP address and may set cookies in order to attribute a resulting booking to this site.
Affiliate links are marked with rel="sponsored" and disclosed in the footer of every page. If you buy through one, we may receive a commission at no extra cost to you. Plain affiliate links transmit nothing until you click them; for the resulting data transfer to the partner, the legal basis is Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR (legitimate interest in financing the operation of this website). For details of how each partner processes your data, please consult their own privacy policies.
Local storage
This site sets no cookies of its own. It uses your browser’s local storage only for the cached Rome weather reading described above, your consent choice for partner widgets, and your analytics opt-out, if you set one. These entries are strictly necessary to provide the features you use and to remember your privacy choices (§ 25(2) no. 2 TDDDG). GetYourGuide widgets, and the Travelpayouts script once you have consented, may set their own cookies, as described in the previous section.
Cookie settings
Change or withdraw your choices here at any time.
Your rights
Under the GDPR you have the right to request access to the personal data we hold about you (Art. 15), to have it rectified (Art. 16) or erased (Art. 17), to restrict its processing (Art. 18), to data portability (Art. 20), and to object to processing based on legitimate interest (Art. 21). Where processing is based on consent, you may withdraw that consent at any time with effect for the future.
To exercise any of these rights, contact us at contact@romemaps.com. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority, in particular in the member state of your residence, place of work, or the place of the alleged infringement.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy to reflect changes to the site or to legal requirements. The current version always applies and is published on this page.
